This September, the inaugural Kootenay Women in Business Summit is set to be a pivotal event for female entrepreneurs in the region. Organized by Lynn Hiscoe, a psychotherapist at Creston’s emPoweredlives, the summit aims to address the unique challenges faced by women in business, from managing stress and financial pressures to balancing family responsibilities.
Hiscoe, who has spent years in close conversation with women through her therapeutic practice, observed that many female business owners, particularly younger ones with families, are experiencing significant emotional strain. “What I’m noticing is a lot of younger women entering business who have families, dealing not only with the trials and tribulations of business but also with motherhood,” said Hiscoe. “It’s taking a toll on their emotional well-being.”
The summit, scheduled for September 19-20 at the Creston and District Community Complex, seeks to provide a supportive space where women can share their experiences and strategies. The two-day event will feature keynote speakers, panel discussions, and networking opportunities. Notable speakers include Ona Stanton, a marketing expert and co-host of the event, Andrea Warkentin, a leading real estate developer, and Dr. Kim Hine, a naturopathic practitioner. Local business owners Alanna Wilson, Amanda Goodman Lee, Jordana Champagne, Candi Huscroft, and Meagan Knoop will also contribute their insights.
Chef Maria Aryan, a well-known local culinary artist, will provide gourmet lunches, highlighting the region’s vibrant food scene.
“The women who are coming to speak are excited to share their knowledge and gifts because they see the benefit of being part of a larger community,” said Hiscoe, who brings 25 years of experience and the perspective of a mother of three to the summit. She understands the complexities of balancing professional goals with family life and emphasizes the importance of a support network.
Hiscoe envisions the summit as an annual event, with plans to rotate it across different communities, building a strong, supportive network for women in business throughout the Kootenays.
