Born into challenging circumstances, Andrés initially pursued a traditional path toward success, earning a degree in Business Administration and building a career in insurance. She achieved milestones such as buying her first home by the age of 25. However, a move to Mexico for what was meant to be a short sabbatical led to a life-altering shift in perspective. Taking a temporary position at a bilingual elementary school, she was soon asked to step in as a fifth-grade teacher. This pivotal moment shifted her career trajectory from business to education.
While teaching, Andrés completed an MBA and became deeply inspired by the impact of education on students who shared her background. Returning to the U.S., she was faced with a crossroads: remain in insurance or join a new charter school in Austin. The school’s mission to ensure that “zip codes should not define destiny” resonated with her deeply, and despite a significant pay cut, she chose to commit to education.
Today, Andrés leads designEDengagement, where she focuses on culturally responsive programs and building relationships between educators, families, and communities. She believes that education is not only about academics but also about creating a supportive network for every student to thrive.
