Harrell Design + Build, an employee-owned company created by women, has been a leader in the home remodelling industry for nearly 40 years. On Thursday morning, the company celebrated its grand opening in Mountain View with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
CEO Lisa Sten remarked, “We’re so excited to be back in Mountain View,” in front of a group of staff members, citizens, and city officials, including Mayor Alison Hicks and CEO of the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce Peter Katz.
This is not Harrell Design + Build’s first venture into Mountain View; the company already has another location at 2284 Old Middlefield Way. It is undoubtedly the most ambitious, though. It’s our “forever home,” according to Sten.
The 12,720 square foot, recently refurbished property, formerly occupied by Frames Unlimited and Art, has a 7,000 square foot showroom with full-room exhibits, home décor items, and open areas for seminars and neighbourhood gatherings.
We now have a single location for everything, albeit it took some years to get here, according to Sten.
“And there’s still room for the building to expand,” she continued.
About fifty employees work at Harrell Design + Build, which occupies a little over half of the building. Other companies rent the remaining space.
The announcement of Harrell Design + Build’s return, which is especially encouraging given the city’s recent concentrated efforts to entice firms to Mountain View after a seven-year hiatus, came from Katz.
In 1985, Harrell Design + Build—then known as Harrell Remodeling—was founded in a garage in Menlo Park. Together with Ann Benson, her lifelong partner, who she met while touring as a musician in Texas, Iris Harrell launched the business. Company legend states that Benson gave Harrell a screwdriver and instructed him to “start doing something.” Harrell didn’t turn around.
