According to President Cordon, it takes a lifetime to become a lifelong follower of Jesus Christ

Young Women General President Bonnie H. Cordon used two instances involving the Saviour and His early apostles to highlight the significance of full-time missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints striving to become lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ and to assist those they teach learn what it means to be a covenant keeper.

Speaking on Saturday, June 24, at the Provo Missionary Training Center’s 2023 Seminar for New Mission Leaders, she cited Peter’s audacious declaration to Jesus at Caesarea Philippi that “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).

Peter was later warned by Jesus during the Last Supper that Satan wanted to possess him and sift him like wheat. However, as stated in Luke 22:32, “I have prayed for these, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.”

According to Sister Cordon, the Saviour was aware that Peter was still on a discipleship journey despite having such a strong conviction. It takes a lifetime to become a lifelong disciple.

Then, she recalled going to the studio of Joseph Brickey, an artist who had been hired by the Church to create a sizable mural that would serve as the background for the statues of Jesus and the Twelve Apostles at the Rome Italy Temple Visitors’ Centre.

President Cordon pointed out how Brickey started with an outline in only one section, established a pattern before adding shading, texture, and detail, then repeated the process as he proceeded from section to section while a time-lapse movie was being played.
