Nigerian Activist Aisha Falode Pushes the Limits

Some of the names that are prominently displayed throughout the history of Nigerian women’s football are Mercy Akide, Perpetua Nkwocha, and Asisat Oshoala. These legends have made Nigeria a force in women’s football through their dribbling, goals and passes. Aisha Falode has made contributions to African sport in general and Nigerian football in particular that are no less meaningful as those made by Super Falcon and other players of a comparable calibre with the ball in their hands.

The current President of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has become one of the most ardent advocates for women’s rights on the Mother Continent in addition to her extended career as a journalist, during which she covered several FIFA World CupsTM. Naturally, she was a major figure among the 36 attendees of the Women in Football Leadership Programme’s fourth iteration, held in Lausanne last month.

“The programme has had a considerable impact on me, because of what I learned – the activities and meetings I was able to take part in, as well as the ideas that have been shared,” she tells FIFA.com. “It’s been both exciting and eye-opening. Many subjects were addressed in a short time span. Nonetheless, that time was precious considering the experience and knowledge that we were all able to take back to our respective countries.”

This seminar, which is held every year, serves as a learning opportunity for female leaders in the sport who want to advance their education, increase their expertise, and create a strong network to support the inclusion of women in the world of football. Participants, who represent all six confederations and are chosen by their respective member associations, hold leadership posts as various as general secretary, executive committee member, director, or president, which is the position held by Aisha Falode in the NWFL Premiership.
