Businesswomen gathered at a symposium in Harlem on Thursday to exchange success strategies.
The 12th annual Gold Women’s Business Connect event brought together like-minded women at the Aloft Hotel in Harlem. Debra Dixon-Anderson, the creator of Light of Gold PR, opened the discussion by urging people to interact and network. In addition to helping to plan the celebration, Juneteenth NYC promoted Black culture beyond the confines of the festival.
“We started curating these events together, and we realized that Juneteenth or Women’s History Month is not just about one day, one month or one time,” said Dixon-Anderson. “It’s something that we have to be mindful of all the time.”
Speaking to the group, Nicky Sunshine discussed her tenacity in running Comedy In Harlem, the city’s only Black-owned comedy club, alongside her spouse. The pipes above them twice ruptured in the first few months after they opened.
Sunshine declared, “We genuinely believe in what we’re doing.” “This is why we wake up in the morning, so because we have that passion for it, we hit challenges head on.”
Kiara “Ambi G” Green, an artist and the host of Juneteenth NYC’s Lunch and Learn series, continued, “We need to illuminate the power of our people, the power of unity and just what happens when we help each other.”
Before June 19, the holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Africans, Juneteenth NYC is host to a number of events.
