In Terms of Domestic Box Office, ‘Barbie’ Has Surpassed all Other 2023 Releases

The collaboration between director Greta Gerwig, Mattel, and Warner Bros. Discovery has led to the highest-grossing movie of the year in North America, with their “Barbie” movie surpassing $575.4 million at the domestic box office. This achievement dethrones Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which previously held the title with its $574 million earnings.

The “Barbie” movie, based on the iconic doll, has also become a strong contender for the highest-grossing global release of the year, with a total of $1.3 billion worldwide. It’s closely approaching the $1.35 billion earned by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” since its release in April. These two films are currently the only ones to have crossed the $1 billion mark in box office earnings this year.

Interestingly, the success of “Barbie” and “Super Mario” stands out in a landscape where audiences have shown a preference for fresh content over superhero movies and franchise installments.

“Barbie” set its record-breaking box office run in motion with a strong debut in July, earning $162 million, the highest opening for the year. Notably, it maintained the top spot at the box office for four consecutive weekends and is projected to continue driving ticket sales throughout the summer and fall.

One noteworthy aspect of “Barbie’s” success is its consistent performance, with weekend drops in box office earnings averaging under 43% since its opening. This is significantly better than the usual drop of around 60% for big films after their initial release. With fewer major films scheduled for release in the near future, “Barbie” is expected to maintain its ticket sales momentum with limited competition.
